My Problem With the Fitness Industry on Social Media

Over the past few years, fitness has grown exponentially on social media.  There are thousands of people posting their workouts, giving fitness advice and even becoming fitness influencers.  Now-a-days it’s not unrealistic to make an income on social media by posting fitness related content.  You can get sponsors and even start your own successful business if you have enough engaged followers.  I love that health and fitness has now become “cool”.  It’s “‘cool” to post your workouts and your healthy food meals and motivate others to live a healthy lifestyle, and I think it’s awesome that so many people are changing their lifestyles around.  This is what I love about social media and being able to connect virtually with others.  You can follow like-minded individuals and gather advice from them even if you’ve never actually met them in real life.

There are so many great things that can come from social media and I think it’s a great tool to use if you’re looking for motivation and tips to get into a healthy lifestyle.  However, I do have a big problem with most of the fitness industry on social media and that’s what I wanted to write about.  This has been bothering me for awhile and I thought it would be an interesting topic to get other people’s opinions on.  The thing that bothers me about the fitness industry is that it seems to be most people’s main priority in life.  Now, I’m not saying that health and fitness isn’t important because I think it most definitely is.  But there are so many people that seem to only care about fitness to a point that they’re missing out in other areas of their life.  I used to be one of these people.  I would choose not to go out with friends for brunch, drinks, etc. because I didn’t want to eat unhealthy food.  I was missing out on building relationships with friends because I was afraid of a few extra calories.  I know some people on social media talk about balance and I think that’s great.  I just feel like so many people portray the lifestyle as #gymlife #nodaysoff and I think it gives the wrong message.

Fitness is great.  Eating healthy is great.  But if it’s consuming your life to the point where you don’t hang out with your friends and family, it’s not so great.  Life is about building relationships with others and creating memories that will last.  Not about being the fittest or having the best body.  I guarantee no one will care what your body looked like when you die.  They’ll care about how you made them feel and the time you spent with them.  And I think this should be more focused on in the fitness industry.  So many people spend so much of their time and energy on their aesthetics, when in reality we should be spending more time on our relationships with others, becoming a more generous and compassionate person and giving back to those less fortunate.  I’m speaking to myself when I write this as well and it’s one of my goals for 2018.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below!

  1. To a certain extent – I agree with you when some people get too into having the best body and neglect their other priorities in life. I guess it takes time for some to realize that it’s not all about looking good all the time, its the journey and the things that you learn along the way, the new friends you make and so on 🙂 Great post btw! I didn’t even realize this fact until I read this haha.

  2. Totally agree! I stop doing instagram lately , been off Facebook for months, I needed to have more time for myself & family. I did however started reading inspiring blog post beginning this year. Honestly, it’s the best social media to be realistically inspired about life , faith , lifestyle change. It showcase both the good & bad, not just the pretty ones we see that most post on instagram or Facebook. Wonderful post👍
